The 80s are considered the period of origin of many legendary sports shoes, which is why this period in particular has had a lasting influence on the sneaker culture we know. Even 40 years later, the major sporting goods manufacturers are still picking up on the numerous silhouettes of bygone days and releasing them in a huge range of colours and shapes. The basketball style of the 80s is thus more relevant than ever for today's trends and the timeless design still tells the stories of that time.

Brands like PUMA are of course more than aware of the almost infinite potential of this era, which is why there has been an increased focus on the iconic silhouettes from the dusty archives, especially in recent years. Already last year, the legendary PUMA Slipstream was revived as part of this vintage initiative and given a revamped look and fresh colours. In 2022, the iconic silhouette continues to receive attention and is now available at retailers like Foot Locker in four brand new colourways.

The History of the PUMA Slipstream

The year was 1987 and the first model of the PUMA Slipstream was born as a direct successor to the popular SKY LX and was intended to replace it as a successful basketball shoe. The German sporting goods manufacturer mastered this undertaking with ease, as the Slipstream was loved by countless players for its performance, stability and cushioning. As is often the case, the success of the shoe extended far beyond the basketball court, which is why the sporty look of the silhouette was also able to establish itself in the sneaker community as well as in hip-hop dance crews.

An important reason for the popularity of the Slipstream was the so-called "Anti Shock System", which was able to provide the players with a cushioning that was unsurpassed until then. The simple look with white base and anthracite accents also played a considerable role in the success story of the shoe. The strong growth in demand ultimately ensured that the sneaker was available in a variety of colours by 1988. With releases like the Slipstream Snake or "The Beast", PUMA further consolidated the popularity of the model by using unusual materials like snakeskin or faux fur.

The Rebirth of the Icon

Although the PUMA Slipstream has been relaunched a few times in recent years, it was only last year that it became a priority for the German sports brand. This campaign ultimately ensured that we were provided with a multitude of fresh colourways in the past months and that the sneaker continues to receive an extremely high level of attention in 2022.

The new edition of course remains true to the basketball heritage of the 80s and merely adapts the silhouette to today's standards. The origins of the icon are still clearly visible, which is why the key elements remain.

New Edition of the PUMA Slipstream

For the latest batch of drops, PUMA has taken the low-cut version of the Slipstream and equipped it with contemporary updates. The upper is made from premium and therefore durable leather, which has been layered to create a multi-layered look. The curved formstrips on the side panels are of course a must and give the model its timeless slipstream look. The heel elements have been finished with a velvety suede that shows off embedded stripes. The unmistakable Puma Cat logo can be found in the centre of the pattern.

The trademark is also used on the tongue tags and the outer midsoles, while a SOFTFOAM+ insole on the inside provides the necessary comfort. The heel is particularly well protected to ensure soft cushioning. The rubberised outsole uses the characteristic Slipstream traction pattern, which should provide the necessary grip in everyday life.

Five Retro-Inspired Colourways at Foot Locker!

Foot Locker is now offering the brand new colourways of the revived PUMA Slipstream, equipping both children and adults with trendy colours in the corresponding sizes. The elementary school sizes are available from a price of 75€, while the women's shoes are available for 100€ and the men's shoes for 110€.

  • The PUMA Slipstream "Intense Red" uses a clean white as a base, while red accents are placed on the eyelets, soles, heels, tongue tags as well as near the formstrips. Golden cat logos enhance the aesthetic of the sneaker immensely and in combination with the light grey on the outsoles ensure a clean look.
  • The PUMA Slipstream "Peacot" uses the same construction as the "Intense Red", but replaces the red accents with a deep dark blue. The clean aesthetic therefore remains and a colourful alternative is offered.
  • The PUMA Slipstream "Black" is also based on the two previous colourways and replaces the colour accents with a deep black. The Cat logos, however, are now a clean white, while the outsole is black throughout.
  • The PUMA Slipstream "Light Sand" is the clearest departure from the previous design concept of the other releases and impresses with a mix of beige, orange, black and white colours. The almost gold-looking beige is used on the rear mudguards, the upper eyelets, some parts of the tongue and the front of the outsole. The orange colour, on the other hand, is used very sparingly and is found in the frame of the small window and in the rear area of the outsole. Finally, the deep black is placed on the front eyelets, the heels, the inner lining and the mid outsole.
