New Balance Celebrates 40 Years of 990 with "Version 1" and "Version 2"

Few sporting goods manufacturers carry as many years of history as Boston-based label New Balance, and the ever-popular 990 line is one of NB's hottest lines. Now, the brand is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 990 line with a New Balance 990 "Version 1" and a 990v2 "Version 2".

The former edition first debuted in 1982 and the latter version in 1998, and although there are almost two decades between the sneakers, silver metallic details and red branding tie the two eras together. Now, let's take a closer look at the shoes.

The New Balance 990 "Version 1" is made of lightweight mesh and premium suede. Steel grey hits accentuate the base, as well as the overlays for a metallic look, while white brandings on the sides recall the early days. The Version 1 label on the sides and other branding are all in red.

Next, we take a look at the New Balance 990v2 "Version 2", which has a more stony look. Leather, suede and mesh comprise the retro sneaker with soft brown tones for a calm contrast. The Version 2 label and New Balance logos get the same shade of red, and the signature ABZORB midsole is packed with cushioning.
