In 2022 we celebrate several anniversaries at once. The Swoosh turns 50, 40 years ago Bruce Kilgore designed the Nike Air Force 1 and the Nike Air Max 97 celebrates its 25th birthday. It is one of the most popular Air Max silhouettes, even if a big selection has been lacking in recent months. But what do we actually know about the retro sneaker with the voluminous Air Unit? Here are a few facts you might not have known.

The number "97" in Nike Air Max 97 actually stands for the birth year of the silhouette. It was designed 25 years ago by Christian Tresser and is an aerodynamic running shoe with a linear design. The biggest feature of the shoe, however, is the legendary Air Max cushioning at the bottom. The silhouette used the continuous "Air" element for the first time.

The inspiration behind the dynamic design of the Nike Air Max 97, however, is not 100% known to us. Rumour has it that Christian Tresser was inspired by Japanese high-speed trains. But it is also possible that its creator was inspired by a silver mountain bike. Official Nike pictures show sketches in which the shoes can be seen next to the bike.

The midsoles and outsoles also take a similar approach. The former remains completely clean, while the recycled outsoles contrast. They have a sustainable approach as they are made of Nike Grind rubber. Inside the bulbous sole, we had the Air Unit painted in "Sea Glass". The yellowed approach gives the Nike Air Max 97 By You a modern vintage flair. Finally, icy suede applications in "Court Blue" round off the design of the sneaker.

The combination of leather, suede and mesh not only looks good, but also ensures excellent comfort. Thanks to the lightweight materials, high breathability is guaranteed and the more robust elements such as leather and suede increase durability.
